How can you ensure that you or your staff use observation skills to score the AEPS®, Second Edition Test correctly and consistently? Add AEPS® Interrater Reliability Certification to your professional development toolbox! Invaluable for states and districts that require teachers to demonstrate reliability on assessments, this online certification module helps early educators use AEPS Level II (Three to Six Years) accurately to promote real progress for every child.

When AEPS users are certified, you can be confident that your assessment information is reliable: for every child, across observers, across different circumstances, and on different days. And more accurate AEPS results mean better intervention and instructional decisions—and better child outcomes.

HOW IT WORKS
The AEPS Interrater Reliability Certification module takes about 3–4 hours to complete. In the module, the user views a narrated training presentation and watches video examples of real children. While observing children in naturalistic videos, they take a practice test and review the correct answers. Then, the user completes the certification test, observing and scoring items across every area of the AEPS Test for Three to Six Years: fine motor, gross motor, adaptive, cognitive, social-communication, and social. The online system calculates and reports overall results and results by area immediately—and gives them a chance to review the correct answers and rationale for each score to build their knowledge. Users who score 80% or higher on the test are certified reliable for three years and can print a certificate. Those with scores that fall below 80% can review the first test and then take a second test to try for certification.

A user's access period for the certification module is valid for one year from the date of purchase. Each user should purchase their own subscription. Administrators can purchase multiple subscriptions for staff with the ability to view reports showing user progress and test results

The components of the AEPS Interrater Reliability Certification modules include:

  • AEPS Scoring Guide: This narrated slide presentation, with embedded video examples, provides a helpful review of important scoring rules and guidelines of the AEPS Test. Users are required to review the AEPS Scoring Guide before taking the AEPS Practice Test.

  • AEPS Practice Test: The Practice Test simulates the actual test users will take to become certified. The Practice Test must be completed in order to advance to the Interrater Reliability Test. This practice will acquaint users with the format of the test so users become comfortable with navigating through the steps of the test completion.

  • AEPS Interrater Reliability Certification Test A: Users will watch 17 video clips (0:08–3:29 minutes in length) and follow instructions to score the child being observed on the pre-selected items from the AEPS scoring record form, the Child Observation Data Recording Form (CODRF).

  • Review Test A: After completing Test A, users are immediately able to view their answers compared to the “gold standard” for each item as determined by developers of AEPS

  • Certification: If users achieve agreement of 80% or higher with the gold standard scoring, they will be certified as reliable in scoring the AEPS Test. A dated certificate with the user’s name will be generated in the system that can be printed or stored in the user’s profile in the AEPS Training LMS.

Note: If users do not achieve certification with Test A, there are additional steps for the user to make another attempt.

    • Preparing for Second Attempt: Users will find helpful guidance for what to study and how to prepare before attempting to take Test B.

    • Interrater Reliability Certification for Test B: Test B has video clips (0:46–2:48 minutes in length). Users can watch different content and score different AEPS Test items from those included in Test A.
